Overview

This eLesson is designed to provide plant breeders and associated professionals with a basic understanding of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). The concepts covered by this section include: the purpose of the IPPC, the development of phytosanitary measures, the role of national and regional plant protection organizations, phytosanitary certification, and the benefits of regulating the trade of plants and plant products to prevent the spread and establishment of pests.

Objectives:

After completing this lesson, you will be able to :

1. Explain the over-arching intent or purpose of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

2. List and explain the key activities of national and regional plant protection organizations (NPPO’s and RPPO’s)

3. Explain the purpose and key elements of a pest risk analysis.

4. Explain the purpose and details of phytosanitary certification

5. Explain key benefits of the IPPC framework in preventing the spread and establishment of plant pests and how this contributes to food security and agricultural sustainability.
