Predicting Evolution
Today, Dr. Martin would confess that his mid 1990's prediction that Roundup had just completed its most effective weed control year was an easy prediction. What he could not do is predict which weeds would evolve first or the rate at which weed populations would change. Making these more difficult predictions is the goal of crop pest biologists, and they need to increase their understanding of how genes control reproductive success under different pest control situations. Their motive is to help the farmer maintain the use of effective pest control methods for more years.
